The problem is that, based on resumes, it’s actually quite difficult to spot which marketers are stronger on thinking vs. execution. Nearly all marketing resumes look the same — I grew something x%, I doubled something — regardless if that person did the strategy work or the day-to-day execution.
I think my leaning currently is that it’s harder to find strategic marketers and there are so many great freelancing sites out there. If I were building a marketing team today, I think I would stick to 1 strategic, marketing leader as long as possible and get work done using a team of outsourced workers. Basically building those “only do the the most important things” muscles as long as possible.
