The “trigger words” advice is so good. Some that I notice in my own writing are:

  • “Key” — usually means I’m trying to insist that something is important, but haven’t really proven it. So I just say “it’s key.”
  • “Clearly” — again, this is almost always a sign that I haven’t stated it clearly so I have to say “clearly”…as if I can somehow persuade my reader of the obviousness of it.

Also on the note of editing yourself, I’ve found that reading a piece out loud is the single best way to get out of my head and read objectively. Best case is to have a really amazing editor, second best is to let a piece sit for 24 hours than come back to it with fresh eyes. In some cases, you won’t have either of those things. Reading out loud is a life saver in these scenarios.
